Miroslav Klose appointed as head coach of 1. FC Nürnberg

1. FC Nürnberg has announced the appointment of Miroslav Klose, Germany’s record goalscorer, as their new head coach. This marks Klose’s first managerial role in Germany, following his tenure at SCR Altach in Austria. He brings a wealth of experience from his previous coaching roles, including serving as an assistant to Hansi Flick with the national team and coaching Bayern Munich’s under-17 team.

Klose’s vision and motivation

Klose expressed his enthusiasm for joining Nürnberg, highlighting the club’s rich tradition, passionate fan base, and commitment to honest work. He stated, “Tradition, passion, honest work, great fans – these are all things that I love about football and that I love with the 1. FC Nuremberg connect. That’s why the opportunity to become a trainer here immediately grabbed me. With its junior work, the club has a great foundation on which we want to build further.”

Klose also emphasized his longstanding relationship with Joti Chatzialexiou, the new director, noting, “I have known and appreciated Joti for many years. We are on the same wavelength humanly and from the way we think about football. Now it’s time to get started, tackle it and get the season on the right track.”

Structural changes at Nürnberg

Nürnberg has undergone significant structural changes recently, with former head coach and director Dieter Hecking departing the club and being replaced by Joti Chatzialexiou. Klose’s appointment as head coach is the first major decision of Chatzialexiou’s tenure.

Klose takes over from Cristian Fiél, who has moved on to become the new head coach of Hertha Berlin. Fiél’s single season in charge saw Nürnberg finish in a disappointing 12th place in the 2. Bundesliga, though the breakout performances of Can Uzun were a highlight. With Uzun set to leave in the summer, one of Klose’s primary challenges will be to replace his firepower and improve the team’s performance in the upcoming season.
