Real Madrid forward Rodrygo has voiced his frustration after missing out on the 30-man shortlist for the 2024 Ballon d’Or. Despite delivering a strong performance during the 2023-24 season, the 23-year-old Brazilian failed to secure a nomination, unlike several of his Real Madrid teammates.
Strong season, but no nomination
Rodrygo recorded 17 goals and provided nine assists in 51 appearances for Real Madrid last season, contributing to the team’s success in both La Liga and the Champions League. However, despite these impressive statistics, the Brazilian international was not selected for the prestigious award’s shortlist.
His teammates, including England’s Jude Bellingham and fellow Brazilian Vinicius Jr., were named among the nominees. Other Real Madrid players such as Dani Carvajal, Federico Valverde, Antonio Rudiger, and retired star Toni Kroos also earned spots on the list. France striker Kylian Mbappe, who recently joined Real Madrid from Paris Saint-Germain, was also included in the 30-man roster.
Feeling overlooked
Speaking to ESPN, Rodrygo expressed disappointment over being left out. “I was upset, I think I deserved it,” he said, while also acknowledging the merit of the players who were selected. “I don’t want to downplay anyone’s achievements, they deserved it too. But I believe I should have been among the 30.”
Rodrygo hinted that his versatility might have played a role in his exclusion. “Often, I’m just filling gaps,” he explained. “If someone’s missing in a position, they put me there. Whether it’s on the right wing, as a striker, or in another role, I step in. Maybe that hurts me a bit, but I’m always there for the team.”
Award process and announcement
The Ballon d’Or shortlist is compiled by France Football’s editorial team, with input from Ballon d’Or ambassador Didier Drogba and selected media representatives. The winner of the coveted award will be revealed at a ceremony in Paris on October 28.
While Rodrygo did not make the list, his determination remains strong as he continues to play a vital role for both Real Madrid and the Brazilian national team.
