History was made during Wednesday’s Carabao Cup semi-final between Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool, as referee Stuart Attwell delivered an unprecedented in-stadium explanation of a VAR decision.
The landmark moment occurred when Attwell used the stadium’s public address system to explain why Dominic Solanke’s late goal for Tottenham was disallowed. This marked the first time such an announcement was made in English football.
“After a review, Dominic Solanke was in an offside position,” Attwell stated, clarifying the reason for overturning the goal. Despite this ruling, Spurs managed to clinch a 1-0 victory, with Lucas Bergvall finding the net in the 86th minute to secure the first-leg advantage.
Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou expressed skepticism about the value of these announcements. Speaking to Sky Sports, he remarked: “If people think that announcement added anything to the game tonight, then I am sorry. It used to be you put your flag up and the game goes on, but anyway.”
The decision to publicly explain VAR rulings is part of a pilot program being conducted during the League Cup semi-finals. Under this system, referees announce their final decisions after consulting the VAR monitor or ruling on factual scenarios such as handball or offside infractions.
Announcing VAR decisions to the crowd is already common in sports like rugby union and American football. The trial also follows its successful implementation during the 2023 Women’s World Cup, where similar explanations aimed to improve clarity for fans.
The Premier League had previously discussed introducing in-game VAR explanations and hinted that this initiative could roll out during the current season. Whether this practice will be adopted permanently remains to be seen, but Wednesday’s match has undoubtedly set a new precedent for football officiating in England.
