Emery supports Martinez amid expected hostility in Paris

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery is confident Emiliano Martinez can withstand the tense atmosphere expected in Wednesday’s Champions League quarter-final first leg against Paris St-Germain.

The Argentina international is likely to face a frosty reception from French fans at Parc des Princes due to his controversial actions during and after the 2022 World Cup final in Qatar. Martinez played a key role in Argentina’s win over France, notably saving a penalty from Kingsley Coman in the shootout. His celebrations, including holding a doll with Kylian Mbappe’s face during Argentina’s parade, sparked backlash from supporters in France.

This week, Martinez again drew attention after being photographed in a cap decorated with the French cockerel alongside symbols of Argentina’s recent international achievements. The timing, just before his return to Paris, has only added to the scrutiny.

However, Emery remains unfazed by the external noise and praised the 32-year-old’s maturity and growth over the years. “He is more experienced now,” Emery said. “He’s improved in handling pressure and emotions. I worked with him before at Arsenal and now again at Aston Villa, and I see the progress.”

Emery continued: “From the moment he joined Villa until now, he has changed a lot. He is more focused, a better professional, and among the best goalkeepers globally. He even received his best goalkeeper award here in Paris.”

Villa players focused ahead of high-stakes clash

Emery urged Martinez to stay focused on the task ahead, despite the attention surrounding his recent actions. “It’s all about the football,” he said. “These moments bring emotional pressure, but you must stay grounded, stay concentrated, and handle your personal milestones carefully.”

Midfielder Youri Tielemans also addressed questions about Martinez’s symbolic cap. He brushed aside the distraction, stating, “I’m only concerned with the match. As long as everything remains within football boundaries, it’s not something I’m bothered by.”

Martinez’s headwear featured references to Argentina’s four recent titles – the World Cup, two Copa America trophies, and the Finalissima, a 3-0 win against Italy in 2022.

Rashford set for Parc des Princes return

Another player under the spotlight is Marcus Rashford, who will return to the Parc des Princes for the first time since scoring a dramatic last-minute penalty for Manchester United in 2019, sealing a memorable Champions League triumph over PSG.

Now on loan at Aston Villa, Rashford has earned praise from Emery for his performances since arriving in January. “He is professional, respectful, and getting better every week,” Emery noted. “He’s working hard and getting used to new responsibilities.”

Emery highlighted Rashford’s versatility and recent role change. “He started on the left, now he’s more central. We’re still finding the best way to use him, but he’s adapting well. The most important thing is his happiness. I see him enjoying his time here, and that’s very important.”
