Paris’ new star shines

When Désiré Doué left the pitch after just 64 minutes during Paris St-Germain’s loss at Arsenal last October, the 19-year-old looked isolated and overwhelmed. Once labelled as France’s next rising star, his quiet performance in that Champions League defeat seemed to mark a difficult beginning in the PSG shirt.

Six months later, however, the narrative has shifted dramatically. The teenager from Angers has evolved into one of PSG’s most captivating figures, helping to drive their charge through Europe with a mix of flair and resilience. Since that tough evening in London, Doué has become a central figure in Luis Enrique’s reshaped side, one that now prioritizes unity over individual stardom.

His growth has been on display throughout the tournament. Against Manchester City in January, he delivered a dynamic performance in a 4-2 win. At Anfield, he made a game-changing substitute appearance and calmly converted the deciding penalty in a tense shootout. More recently, his spectacular curling strike against Aston Villa in the quarter-finals underlined just how far he has come.

A new generation in Paris

Doué’s transformation reflects a broader shift at PSG. Alongside fellow rising star Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, he represents the club’s move away from the era of big-name signings like Neymar, Lionel Messi, and Kylian Mbappé. Instead, this new-look PSG values development and structure – and Doué has fit in perfectly.

His £43m transfer from Rennes raised questions, particularly given he wasn’t a guaranteed starter there the previous season. But PSG were convinced by his long-term potential. Coach Luis Enrique and sporting director Luis Campos believed they were signing a future star, and their confidence is now bearing fruit.

Doué’s strong mentality and physicality impressed PSG staff early on, with his powerful lower body earning comparisons to rugby players. Behind the scenes, the club has praised his work ethic in training and the gym, noting a level of maturity beyond his years.

Even before joining PSG, Doué was making noise on the youth stage. He starred in France’s Under-17 European Championship win in 2022 and featured at the Olympics in Paris two years later. Although the Olympic campaign may have delayed his adaptation to PSG by limiting his preseason, Luis Enrique’s patient handling helped him settle in gradually.

Family influence and future potential

Football runs deep in the Doué family. His older brother Guéla plays right-back for Strasbourg, while cousin Yann Gboho features in Toulouse’s midfield. Their father, Maho, has been a guiding figure throughout, organizing extra training and remaining a steady presence in their careers.

Doué made his full international debut for France in March, scoring in the shootout win over Croatia in the Nations League quarter-final. His selection was seen as a breakthrough moment, especially considering the competition from other young talents like Rayan Cherki and Maghnes Akliouche.

Life in Paris has also brought new challenges. Moving from the calmer environment of Rennes to the spotlight of the capital required adjustment. Now living in Boulogne-Billancourt, Doué has had to grow comfortable with public attention, even in everyday moments like a visit to a local bookshop.

Despite early setbacks, Doué’s steady rise has captured the imagination of fans and experts alike. Once overshadowed by peers such as Mathys Tel, he’s now being spoken of as the leading figure in his age group. With his Champions League form turning heads and a national team call-up under his belt, the teenager once seen as unprepared is now seen as unstoppable.

As PSG prepares for another crucial night at Villa Park, Doué stands as a symbol of both promise and progress – a young player learning fast, performing big, and carrying the hopes of a new Paris generation.
