Rangers condemn anti-woke banner and fan misconduct at Europa League match

Rangers Football Club has strongly criticized the actions of a small group of supporters who displayed an anti-woke banner during the Europa League match against Fenerbahce. The controversial sign, which read “Keep woke foreign ideologies out – defend Europe,” has led to a disciplinary charge from UEFA, with the governing body deeming it “racist and/or discriminatory.”

In an official statement, the Scottish Premiership club condemned the act, describing it as deeply saddening and unacceptable. Rangers reiterated their commitment to diversity and inclusion, emphasizing their pride in their multicultural team, staff, and fan base. The club assured supporters that it would work to identify those responsible and ensure they face appropriate consequences.

“For the club to face a charge of this nature in 2025 is both shameful and embarrassing,” the statement read. “Those who believe such views are acceptable have no place at Rangers.”

Fan misconduct under scrutiny

Beyond the controversial banner, Rangers also condemned further incidents of fan misbehavior. The club expressed dismay over objects being thrown onto the pitch during the Fenerbahce match and criticized the ongoing use of pyrotechnics by certain individuals. UEFA has also issued an additional charge relating to the blocking of passageways at Ibrox.

The club pointed out that their own players and staff were targeted with missiles during Sunday’s Old Firm derby against Celtic, calling the recurring issue a concerning trend across Scottish football stadiums. Rangers urged all fans to conduct themselves responsibly and respect safety regulations.

“This behavior has no place in sport or society,” the club stated. “Fans engaging in such acts are not welcome at Rangers matches.”

Potential consequences for the club and fans

Rangers warned that the actions of a minority could have significant consequences for the club and its supporters. The use of pyrotechnics during recent matches has already led to restrictions, with 500 fans barred from attending future games. Following further incidents at the Old Firm clash, the club faces the risk of an additional 800 fans being excluded from attending the Premier Sports Cup at Hampden.

“These actions harm the club directly and indirectly,” Rangers emphasized. “Supporters must understand that continued misconduct will only lead to further sanctions and damage the club’s reputation.”

The club concluded by calling on fans to uphold the values of respect and responsibility, affirming that everyone is welcome to support Rangers as long as they align with those principles.
