UEFA investigates Real Madrid quartet over alleged gestures

UEFA has launched an investigation into claims of improper conduct involving four Real Madrid players after their Champions League last-16 clash with Atlético Madrid. The governing body is examining actions by Antonio Rudiger, Kylian Mbappe, Vinicius Jr, and Dani Ceballos, which allegedly occurred after their team secured a quarter-final spot.

Real Madrid triumphed over their city rivals in a penalty shootout, leading to accusations that some players made inappropriate gestures toward the home supporters. TV footage appeared to show Rudiger making a throat-slitting motion, while Mbappe was seemingly seen grabbing his crotch in response to the crowd.

Atlético Madrid officially reported the incidents to UEFA last week, prompting the disciplinary body to step in.

Possible consequences for players

The four Real Madrid stars could potentially face disciplinary action, including suspension. However, there is no certainty that a ruling will be reached before their quarterfinal encounter against Arsenal. The first leg is scheduled to take place at the Emirates Stadium on 8 April, with the return fixture a week later.

A suspension would be a significant setback for Real Madrid as they prepare to take on the Premier League side in a crucial European fixture. Whether the disciplinary proceedings will conclude in time for any potential sanctions to be applied remains uncertain.

UEFA’s official statement

In response to the allegations, UEFA confirmed that an ethics and disciplinary inspector has been assigned to review the matter.

“Further information regarding this matter will be made available in due course,” the statement added, indicating that a decision will be forthcoming as the investigation progresses.

The outcome of UEFA’s inquiry will determine if any of the players face repercussions for their post-match actions.
